Suradway's Strategic Proposal and Partner Engagement
This case study highlights the collaborative process of aligning Suradway’s mission with stakeholder goals, ensuring impactful communication, and fostering strong relationships to drive systemic change in Ottawa's child welfare system.
The Client
Suradway is a nonprofit organization based in Ottawa, dedicated to connecting parents, sharing information, and providing assistance during crises, primarily focusing on child welfare.
Established to address the overrepresentation of young people from Somali and East African backgrounds in the child welfare system, Suradway is committed to combating anti-Black racism, advocating for parents, and establishing community-based foster homes.
The Challenge
Suradway faced the critical task of developing a comprehensive business plan to effectively present their mission and strategies to key stakeholders, including the Children’s Aid Society and the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services. The organization sought to fill gaps in their documentation, align their objectives with stakeholder expectations, and create a compelling visual presentation to convey their vision.
Key challenges included:
- Addressing the overrepresentation of Black youth in the child welfare system.
- Combating systemic biases and promoting culturally sensitive care.
- Establishing community-based foster homes.
- Aligning strategies with stakeholder expectations and requirements.
- Ensuring financial sustainability and effective risk management.
Our Approach
We leveraged storytelling to humanize the data and highlight the real-life impact of systemic issues. By sharing compelling narratives like Britney Marcano’s story, we illustrated the urgent need for systemic change and the human cost of inaction. These stories were integrated into the business plan and visual presentation to create an emotional connection with stakeholders.
2. Strategic Planning and Theory of Change: We conducted a comprehensive strategic planning process to outline Suradway’s long-term goals and the steps needed to achieve them. This included:
- Strategic Plan Development: Crafting a strategic plan that defines Suradway’s mission, vision, core values, strategic objectives, and key initiatives.
- Theory of Change: Developing a Theory of Change to map out the pathways through which Suradway’s activities would lead to the desired outcomes. This included identifying short-term, medium-term, and long-term outcomes, and the necessary conditions to achieve these outcomes.
3. Financials and Risk Mitigation:
We included a financial analysis and developed a strategic risk management plan to ensure Suradway’s financial sustainability.
4. Alignment with Stakeholder Goals: We meticulously aligned Suradway’s strategies with the goals and priorities of key stakeholders to ensure coherence and support. This involved:
- Stakeholder Analysis: Conducting an in-depth analysis of the goals and strategies of stakeholders such as the Children’s Aid Society and the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services.
- Strategic Alignment: Ensuring that Suradway’s initiatives and objectives were in harmony with stakeholder expectations. This included tailoring the business plan and visual presentation to reflect shared priorities, such as promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in child welfare.
The Impact
The facilitation of this comprehensive and collaborative approach led to several key outcomes:
- Robust Business Plan: A detailed business plan that aligns with stakeholder expectations, addresses gaps, and outlines Suradway’s mission, objectives, strategies, and financial projections.
- Engaging Visual Presentation: A visually appealing presentation that effectively communicates Suradway’s vision, strategies, and the impact of their work. This presentation enhanced stakeholder engagement and support.
- Strategic Alignment: Ensured alignment with the Children’s Aid Society and the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services, addressing their specific requirements and priorities.
- Enhanced Community Trust: By involving stakeholders in the planning process and addressing their concerns, we built stronger relationships and increased community trust and support.
- Clear Action Steps: Established clear action steps and timelines for implementing the business plan, ensuring ongoing progress and accountability.
Suradway is now well-positioned to advocate for systemic change, provide culturally sensitive care, and empower Black youth and families in Ottawa. This collaborative effort not only strengthened Suradway’s operational framework but also paved the way for a more equitable and effective child welfare system.
