Zen and the Art of Making a Living: A Practical Guide to Creative Career

Author: Laurence G. Boldt

Years ago I read “Zen and the Art of Making a Living: A Practical Guide to Creative Career Design” by Laurence G. Boldt. I was unhappy in my work and was desperately looking for answers.

This book is the most innovative, unconventional, and profoundly practical career guide I’ve ever come across!

This book went deeper than mere quick-fix by presenting the opportunity to go on a journey to discover my purpose for being here on planet earth. For job fulfillment and overall life fulfillment, I know I’m not the only one who is recognizing their desire for meaningful work.

I wanted to share some learnings from this book as it relates to “vacations”:

🏖 It’s nice to have a change of scenery, but man, I love my routine. Alhamdulilah. [Oh Saturday 5am readings at my local Timmies, hogging this booth, and with the backdrop of regulars greeting each other… how I missed thee 🤗💕🙌🏾]

🏖 While I fully believe in a natural balance between work and recovery, the damage we do at work can’t be recovered from in our time off.

🏖 The stress that accumulates from the daily grind of a job that you hate lingers. People don’t come back from vacations happy, healthy, and hale, they come back just as sick, and chronically stressed as when they left.

🏖 In creating a life you don’t need a vacation from, you will likely need to employ two strategies:

(1) You’ll have to first change how you interact with the circumstances of your life – *insert blurb about mindset and gratitude*

Then, (2) over time with effort, you can work to change the circumstances themselves…
