Land Acknowledgement & Reconciliation Commitments
1. Our Location & Acknowledgement
Sayid Consulting Inc. operates on the unceded, ancestral territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation.
This region is also part of the historic Métis homeland and continues to be home to First Nations, Inuit,
and Métis peoples.
We recognize the enduring relationships Indigenous peoples have with this land — relationships that long
predate our presence here and continue today.
2. Honouring Context & Historical Injustice
Canada’s prosperity is deeply connected to colonial policies that dispossessed Indigenous peoples, including:
- forced displacement and land theft
- the residential school system
- systemic underfunding of child welfare, health, and social services
- ongoing violations of Indigenous rights and treaty responsibilities
These harms are not historical — they continue to shape community wellbeing, opportunity, and sovereignty today.
3. Our Sector’s Responsibility
As practitioners working in the nonprofit, public, and social-impact sectors, we acknowledge that:
- our sector has often participated in policy development and program design without Indigenous consent
- planning processes have historically devalued Indigenous governance, knowledge systems, and worldviews
- funding and organizational structures frequently reinforce inequity rather than repair it
- community engagement has too often been extractive rather than relational
Recognizing this history informs how we show up as facilitators and strategy partners.
4. Sayid Consulting’s Commitments to Reconciliation
Grounded in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, particularly those related to child welfare,
education, business practices, and professional learning, Sayid Consulting commits to:
A. Practicing Relational Facilitation
- Using approaches that centre dignity, cultural safety, and relational accountability
- Ensuring Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and protocols are respected when invited into processes
B. Supporting Meaningful Community Engagement
- Avoiding extractive methods
- Creating space for Indigenous voices to shape strategy, governance, and organizational decisions
C. Continuing Ongoing Learning
- Participating in education related to treaties, Indigenous rights, and the impacts of colonial policy
- Integrating Indigenous scholarship and teachings into facilitation (where appropriate and with consent)
D. Redistributing Resources
Each year, Sayid Consulting contributes a portion of profits to organizations advancing Indigenous child and family rights, including the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society.
E. Strengthening Sector Practice
- Encouraging clients to reflect on their policies, histories, and responsibilities in relation to reconciliation
- Supporting organizations to develop culturally safe, community-informed strategies
5. Beyond Acknowledgement: An Invitation
Land acknowledgements are only meaningful when paired with action.
We invite other practitioners and organizations in our sector to reflect on:
- the history of their own field within colonial systems
- their responsibilities to the lands and peoples they benefit from
- the commitments they are willing to make toward genuine reconciliation
If this page sparks questions or curiosity about your organization’s reconciliation commitments, we welcome conversation.
