Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box

Author: The Arbinger Institute

Here is my short review:

šŸ“–Ā I find even when I sign onto this social media platforms, we tend to highlight how great we are, what impactful work weā€™re doing, and our positive ripple effect in the world.

šŸ“–Ā We tend to blame all our personal and organizational faults on external factorsā€¦

šŸ“–Ā Generally, the natural human tendency is to blame everything outside ourselves. We do this at an organizational level too. I see this so often in my organizational development work!

šŸ“–Ā This is a hard book to read ā€“ not because the language or ideas are lofty (just the opposite, actually, the ideas have been made extremely accessible).

šŸ“–Ā This book was hard to read because it forced me to take a hard look at the way I live, the way I treat others, and the way I navigate through business, personal, and other situations.

šŸ“–Ā This book beautifully reminded me how we deceive ourselvesā€¦how we often need things to go wrong in order to feel justified in that blame ā€“ thatā€™s not a very easy truth to reconcile oneself with!Ā šŸ˜šŸ˜…

šŸ“–Ā I guess what Iā€™m trying to suggest is not so much we highlight negative aspects of ourselves or our organizationsā€¦ but rather engage in honest self reflection and understand that problems are never outside; the blame game is how we deceive ourselvesā€¦ and ultimately, and rather effectively, undermine any solution to the problem!
